Testing & Validation

Evidence-based testing of complete IoT solutions

Overview

What is Testing & Validation?

Testing & Validation is the structured process of verifying device, sensor, network, data-processing, alarm, and platform behavior through bench testing and field trials. It helps ensure that an IoT solution performs according to defined requirements and that measurements remain consistent from the connected hardware through to the customer platform.

For example, a generator monitoring pilot may report electrical load values, but the customer needs evidence that the readings are accurate as they pass through the sensor, tracker, and monitoring platform.

Why Testing

Key Features & Benefits

  1. 1

    Functional Checks

Verify power, communication, supported sensor readings, and device operating states.

  2. 2

    Data Accuracy

Compare actual inputs and reference measurements against the decoded values displayed by the platform.

  3. 3

    Failure Testing

Evaluate offline recovery, missed messages, and behavior during interrupted updates.

  4. 4

    Documented Acceptance

Record test results, outstanding issues, and customer-approved acceptance criteria.

In Practice

Practical Example

Customer Need:

A generator monitoring pilot reports load values, but the customer requires evidence that the readings are correct throughout the data path.

Example Deployment:

The team tests whether a generator current sensor provides realistic measurements to a compatible tracker and dashboard, comparing the reported values against a suitable reference instrument.

Typical Architecture:

Test plan → bench checks → field checks → defect identification → retesting → acceptance.

Monitoring Data:

  • Measurement accuracy against a reference
  • End-to-end data latency
  • Packet or message delivery success
  • Pass/fail results and recorded defects

Expected Outcome:

The solution provider can make a more informed deployment decision using a documented test report rather than relying solely on an unverified live demonstration.

Requirements

Required Hardware & Software

  • Suitable reference meter or measurement instrument
  • Test SIM or gateway, where applicable
  • Data and log capture tools
  • Documented test plan and acceptance criteria
  • Test results and acceptance report

Support

How BoxTech Supports Your Project

BoxTech works with IoT solution providers, resellers, system integrators, and software partners to bring the hardware and technical requirements together.

We can support structured bench and field testing, comparison of raw and decoded data, defect tracking, and proof-of-concept acceptance documentation. Testing activities should be aligned with the selected hardware, project requirements, and agreed acceptance criteria.

Support may include hardware sourcing, sample testing, configuration guidance, compatibility checks, and integration assistance, subject to selected products and agreed project scope.

Before You Deploy

What to Validate

  • Measure sensor accuracy against an appropriate reference instrument.
  • Check end-to-end latency and data delivery reliability.
  • Evaluate connectivity coverage and behavior during communication failures.
  • Test offline recovery and confirm that data resumes reporting as expected.
  • Document defects, retest results, and agreed pass/fail criteria before acceptance.
