Wi-Fi HaLow

Sub-GHz Wi-Fi designed for selected IoT deployments

Overview

What is Wi-Fi HaLow?

Wi-Fi HaLow is based on the IEEE 802.11ah standard, which uses sub-GHz frequencies for IoT connectivity. In suitable deployments, it can provide longer reach and lower-power communication than conventional Wi-Fi.

It is designed for connected devices that need local wireless networking across larger areas, such as campuses, warehouses, agricultural premises, and outdoor facilities. Performance depends on regional frequency regulations, compatible hardware, and site radio conditions.

Why Wi-Fi HaLow

Key Features & Benefits

  1. 1

    Extended Reach

Use sub-GHz radio characteristics to support longer-range connections than conventional Wi-Fi in suitable environments.

  2. 2

    IP Networking

Connect compatible IoT devices through a Wi-Fi-family access network.

  3. 3

    Private Network Control

Build and manage a local wireless network where public cellular connectivity is not preferred.

  4. 4

    Flexible Sensor Connectivity

Carry low-rate telemetry between compatible endpoints and access points.

In Practice

Practical Example

Customer Need:

A campus has distributed sensors located beyond the coverage of its ordinary indoor Wi-Fi access points.

Example Deployment:

A large campus connects distributed, low-data monitoring devices through compatible Wi-Fi HaLow access points.

Typical Architecture:

Wi-Fi HaLow Node → HaLow Access Point → Ethernet / Internet Backhaul → Monitoring Platform

Monitoring Data:

  • Wireless signal quality
  • Device association status
  • Sensor measurement data
  • Packet delivery status

Expected Outcome:

A planned private wireless network can consolidate sensor telemetry across a larger site, potentially reducing the number of separate connectivity points required in suitable conditions.

Requirements

Required Hardware & Software

  • IEEE 802.11ah-compatible IoT endpoints
  • Wi-Fi HaLow access points
  • Ethernet or other compatible backhaul
  • Monitoring platform or application integration

Support

How BoxTech Supports Your Project

BoxTech works with IoT solution providers, resellers, system integrators, and software partners to align hardware selection with technical and deployment requirements.

Support may include assessing hardware availability, checking regional frequency requirements, reviewing vendor interoperability, evaluating link budgets, testing sample devices, and assisting with platform integration, subject to the selected products and agreed project scope.

Before You Deploy

What to Validate

Verify regional frequency approvals, compatibility between endpoints and access points, expected site coverage, interference, and real-world radio performance. Confirm that the selected hardware supports the required data flow and integrates with the intended platform.
