Edge Computing

Local processing and automation at the field site

Overview

What is Edge Computing?

Edge computing processes, filters, and manages data close to where it is generated, before sending selected information to the cloud. Depending on the hardware and software, an edge gateway or controller can buffer readings, apply local rules, and continue selected operations when internet access is interrupted.

It is suitable for industrial and remote installations that need local monitoring and automation while reducing dependence on continuous cloud connectivity.

Why Edge Computing

Key Features & Benefits

  1. 1

    Offline Resilience

Continue supported local rules when cloud connectivity is unavailable.

  2. 2

    Lower Uplink Traffic

Aggregate or filter measurements before transmitting them.

  3. 3

    Faster Local Action

Apply suitable thresholds and control logic at the site.

  4. 4

    Data Buffering

Store readings locally and synchronize them when connectivity returns.

In Practice

Practical Example

Customer Need:

A remote station occasionally loses internet connectivity and cannot depend on uninterrupted cloud access for every monitoring decision.

Example Deployment:

A pumping station buffers sensor readings locally and triggers a configured threshold alert while offline.

Typical Architecture:

Sensor → Local Controller / Edge Gateway → Optional Cloud Synchronization

Monitoring Data:

  • Local alarm state
  • Number of buffered readings
  • Synchronization status
  • Device uptime

Expected Outcome:

Critical site-level monitoring can continue within the capabilities and limits of the deployed edge controller.

Requirements

Required Hardware & Software

  • Industrial edge gateway or local controller
  • Supported local rules and processing software
  • Local storage
  • Internet or other network backhaul
  • Cloud synchronization or monitoring platform

Support

How BoxTech Supports Your Project

BoxTech works with IoT solution providers, resellers, system integrators, and software partners to align edge hardware and local processing requirements.

Support may include selecting suitable gateways, reviewing local-rule configurations, defining cloud synchronization behavior, testing sample hardware, and validating restart and offline-recovery scenarios, subject to selected products and agreed project scope.

Before You Deploy

What to Validate

Test offline operation, timestamp integrity, local storage capacity, restart recovery, and synchronization after connectivity returns. Confirm which functions continue without internet access and whether any data may be lost during extended outages.
